Live Shopping

Live shopping, where creators sell products in real-time during a live stream, is one of TikTok's biggest bets. It has been hugely successful in Asian markets and TikTok is working to replicate that success globally.

PMs working on live shopping face questions like: How do you make live shopping engaging for viewers who did not come to shop? How do you handle product returns and quality issues at scale? How do you incentivize creators to do live shopping events? How do you measure success beyond just GMV (gross merchandise value)?

Advertising Products

TikTok's advertising business has matured significantly. The company offers a range of ad formats including in-feed ads, branded effects, hashtag challenges, and spark ads (which boost organic creator content as paid ads).

PMs on the advertising side work on ad targeting, creative optimization, measurement and attribution, and advertiser self-serve tools. The challenge is monetizing effectively without degrading the user experience. Users come to TikTok for entertainment, and ads that feel intrusive will hurt engagement.

Creator Monetization

TikTok's ability to attract and retain top creators depends on offering viable monetization paths. Current options include the Creator Fund (direct payments based on views), live gifts (virtual gifts from viewers that convert to real money), brand partnerships, and TikTok Shop affiliate commissions.

PMs working on creator monetization face the challenge of designing systems that reward quality content, are fair and transparent, and motivate creators to keep producing. The Creator Fund has faced criticism for low payouts, and TikTok is evolving its approach.

Study TikTok Shop as a user. Browse products, watch live shopping streams, and understand the end-to-end purchase flow. Compare it with other social commerce experiences on Instagram and YouTube.

Understand the competitive landscape. How does TikTok Shop compare to Amazon, Shopify, and Meta's commerce features? What is TikTok's unique advantage?

Think about marketplace health metrics. Just like Uber, TikTok Shop is a marketplace. You need to think about both sides: buyers and sellers. What metrics indicate a healthy marketplace?
